    The five-year CAGR of India's spice export was 12%. In February 2022, the exports of spices from India increased by 7.3% to US$ 291.17 million from US$ 271.4 million in January 2022. In 2020-21, India exported 1.76 million tonnes of spices. This was a 46% increase from 2019-20 exports of 1.21 million tonnes

India is known as the land of spices since ancient times and spices possess profound economic, social, and emotional space in Indian society.

 

With a production of around 75 out of the 109 spices listed by the International Organization for Standardization, India is the world’s largest producer of spices. As per the estimate, India’s spice production is 10.49 million tons from an area of 45,17,720 hectares.

 

With different Agro-climatic zones ranging from tropical to temperate, India produces a variety of spices, many of which are native to the subcontinent. Indian spices are always in demand due to their medicinal and culinary properties and varied industrial applications.

 

The unending use and demand for spices are the driving force that makes India the global hub of spices production and post-harvest value-addition.

India’s spices export contributes to a tune of 8.40 percent of India’s Agri exports and around one percent of the total exports from India during 2019-‘20.

 India exported a total of 1.76 million tons of spices and value-added spice products worth the US $ 4178.81 million in 2020-‘21.

 Indian spices and spice ingredients are exported to over 185 countries and the export basket comprises around 225 products.

 Indian spices are mainly exported to China, the USA, Bangladesh, Thailand, UAE, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, the UK, Indonesia and Germany.

  1. OVERCOMING CHALLENGES

Spices Quality is main concern when it comes to export and the major buying countries have established tighter Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) or revoked the approval of some commonly used pesticides.

The Ethylene Oxide contamination (ETO) on spices for shipment to Europe has become a major point of concern.

 

The issue of Ethylene oxide residues in Indian spices in EU countries has turned out to be a major impediment to the Indian spice trade.

 

 

The ban of Chlorpyrifos, a pesticide widely used in spices and other crops, by the European Union affected the spice exports from India to the EU. Recently, the United States revoked all “tolerances” for Chlorpyrifos in the country from February 2022 onwards. As this act could severely affect the spice exports from India we have requested the Spices Board to take up a case with the concerned authorities of USA, appealing for an extended timeframe for the implementation of the revocation.

 

World regulatory authorities and importers have been clamping new strictures on quality parameters for spices and spices products. AISEF and the collaborators have initiated interventions to reach out the different segments in the supply chain through education and continuous training programs. Ultimately, these will help in upbringing the quality of the products not only for exports but also for domestic market.

  1. When purchasing from any supplier of spices at the time check the quality lab report.
  2. Always rely on experienced suppliers of spices.
  3. Be good at communication as continuous price negotiations may take place with your suppliers according to optimizing always our prices.
  4. Always ensure that you are getting what you ordered. Confirm that the quality of the goods differs from the sample.
  5. While procurement of raw material of spices from local mandis or APMC at the time checks Physical analysis.
  6. The spices supplier should hold a large stock of local spices and Export quality spices so check with export quality when the order confirmation.
  7. When u give an overseas importer a spices sample at a time, he assures that the same Product requires when exporting this spices product because the overseas customers also do sample quality lab reports and when importing at the time also check the quality report so be alert.
  8. If you are a new exporter then get a purchase via a Reputed broker or distributor while spices purchase for export.
  9. Check the quality of spices like whole chilly then check the parameters of aflatoxin in the lab report if u found a serious report so do not send this type of product to overseas markets.
